Most excipients are generally inactive substances that are used in low concentrations as formulation aids. They are thus critical to the safe and effective formulation and delivery of active substances in medicines, dietary supplements, medical devices or cosmetics. Excipients also undergo rigorous testing before they are permitted to be used, thus adverse reactions to them are rare.
